Exactly what constitutes Battersea is open to debate as it sprawls from the river directly opposite Chelsea, east to Lambeth, west to Wandsworth Common and south to Clapham Common. The majority of the area is defined by the SW11 postcode.
Along the river between Wandsworth Bridge and Chelsea Bridge, there has been a plethora of new developments with iconic buildings, such as Montevetro designed by Sir Richard Rogers (completed in 2000) and Albion Riverside designed by Sir Norman Foster (completed in 2003), offering penthouse living for the wealthy overspill of Chelsea. Penthouses sell at less than in Chelsea - an attractive proposition if you can bear to cross the river every day.
Battersea Park, overlooking the river and Chelsea, is the traditional focal point. Along Prince of Wales Drive to the south are the ever-popular Edwardian mansion blocks, looking out over the tree tops to the park. Whilst seemingly close to the buzz of the King’s Road, buses are the only real form of transport here.
As you move up the hill towards Clapham Common and to the café and bar culture of Lavender Hill and Battersea Rise, the landscape is dominated by seemingly endless terraces of Victorian houses, with several school conversions offering loft-style living for up-and-coming stars of the pop world.
Northcote Road is the spine of what is known locally as ‘Between the Commons’ and is now a positive metropolis for young city couples looking to start a family. Bars, restaurants, boutiques and the French street market give this area a distinct buzz and, as the birth rate here increases exponentially, so do the number of new maternity-wear shops.
Transport is good, with links to the City via Waterloo on the overland train from Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Common or on the Northern line at Clapham South underground station.
There are also numerous good-quality schools here and in the surrounding area, allowing families to stay locally and make the upgrade to the larger houses on and around Wandsworth Common.
