The county of Thomas Hardy is justly famous for being both rural and beautiful, though, like Hampshire with Southampton, it has Bournemouth and heathland countryside to the south as a slight blemish. From Shaftesbury in the north-east to Lyme Regis in the south-west, it has some of the most rural and beautiful countryside in England, rivalled only probably by Devon. There are no motorways, few railways and fewer aeroplanes, with no major centres of industry and a local economy that is still primarily agricultural - all in under three hours from London. Having said that, the trains are not good - except in the north where Gillingham is under two hours from Waterloo.
The coastline is mainly cliffs and beaches, without the wooded rivers that are the glory of Devon and Cornwall. It is still exceptionally pretty, particularly around Lulworth Cove and from Weymouth along to Lyme Regis. Weymouth itself is a charming Georgian seaside town where summer holidays have not changed much since the 1950s.
Poole Harbour, one of the biggest natural harbours in England, is home to Sandbanks which has some of the most expensive property in the country – quite why is difficult to see.
